Creative Writing is an elective course for students of all ability levels who are interested in studying and experimenting with all of the many genres of creative written expression: personal journals, poetry, prose, personal narratives and essays, play writing, screenplay writing, song lyrics, etc. Students will engage in frequent creative writing exercises, maintain journals of their ideas, read and select classical and modern models which they appreciate, write freely in all genres, experiment with their own style and voice, revise their work, create portfolios of their best pieces, share their work with their peers and provide their peers with feedback. Ultimately, students will seek out other audiences for sharing and receiving recognition for their work, hopefully contributing their pieces both to Canton's website and in-house magazine and to outside competitions and publications.

General
- Students are expected to be in class on time, ready to work with the proper materials (book, pen, paper and having read assigned material an/or prepared assigned homework). Chronic late arrivals to class will naturally result in a lowered grade. Unexcused absences will result in a zero for all work for that day, including quizzes and tests.
- You will be given a weekly assignment sheet. Assignments and due dates will also be posted online. It is your responsibility to know what is due and when it is due so you will be prepared for class.
- Creative Writing is designed as a workshop, so all students are expected to participate in active journaling, sharing and discussion of one another's writing by sharing work, raising relevant, thoughtful questions and observations and paying sustained, consistent attention to the comments of others. Lack of preparation for active work, and/or a passive presence during class time are behaviors that are inconsistent with the goals of this course.
- All work must be handed in by the due date. Late work will not be accepted and will not receive credit.
- Students are expected to know Canton High School’s policy on plagiarism. It will be fully enforced in this class.
- No food is permitted in the classroom. Bottled water is acceptable. (top)
Materials
- Three-ring binder with dividers for notes and handouts.
- Notebook for daily journal writing. You may choose to have a journal section in your binder instead of a separate journal.
Grading
- Major assignments and unit portfolios - 60%
- homework, quizzes and graded in-class assignments - 30%
- Class participation - 10%
